Mike Desforges was admittedly nervous blasting off on day 4 of the 1,000 Islands Northern Stren last weekend. He held a 2 1/2-pound lead over Charlie Hartley and had fished spots 30 to 50 miles away in Lake Ontario the first 3 days.
Day 4 brought big blows that didn’t allow him to get to his fish. So the Burlington, Ontario, pro scrambled in the St. Lawrence River and put together a 17-pound bag to clinch the victory with 77-01.
“It’s right up there,” he said when asked to rank the win against his past achievements, including a 2003 Bassmaster Northern Open triumph. “I don’t fish too many levels higher than that. I wanted to win it real bad. After day 2 when I saw I had a chance to win, I didn’t want to blow it.”
